The Big Five
“Wall of mitosis” was a small art project within the exhibition consisting of 49 miniature watercolor paintings, each a 5 × 5 cm framed depiction of a dividing cell. Visitors were able to purchase a piece through a donation of at least €10 and take it home immediately, with all proceeds supporting the Cancer Counseling Center in Gelsenkirchen.
The project highlighted the concept of cell division, the fundamental process by which cells replicate. It also drew attention to atypical mitoses—irregular or chaotic patterns of division often seen in cancer, where control over cell growth is lost. The aim of this project was to make a direct contribution through the exhibition itself while drawing attention to the essential work of the Cancer Counseling Center. By allowing visitors to take a piece of the exhibition home, I hoped to encourage further conversations and create a lasting reminder of its themes.
